Initial concept

When the series was first proposed, all Christopher had to work from was a rough version of the script to issue #1. This was his first design for main character Michael, based only on the script. This design was also used in the promotional images produced for 2005's San Diego Comic-Con, where Wasteland was first announced.

The first sketches of Abi, Golden Voice and Doc. Abi and Golden Voice have changed little since this first sketch, but Doc's appearance has been altered quite a bit. Unfortunately, Christopher's love of spooky feathers has no place in Wasteland, where birds have been completely extinct for a century.

The first design sketch for the town of Providence. It was too big and too well-built, but the atmosphere was on the right track.

Developing the mood

A mood & atmosphere sketch featuring Michael. This was one of Christopher's most popular designs, perfectly capturing the ominous tone of Wasteland.

A second attempt at Providence, after a bunch of suggestions and clarifications from Antony. This was much closer to how the shanty town would appear in the final story.

Another mood piece, also featuring an early design for the barbaric Sand-Eaters. Nobody has the faintest idea what the big chimney thing is, and Christopher denies all knowledge.
